In preparation for the 2016 Democratic National Convention, the Arizona Democratic Party State Committee approved its 2016 Delegate Selection and Affirmative Action Plan at its recent meeting following a 30-day public comment period. The next step is to submit the plan to the Democratic National Committee for review and approval.
Arizona Democrats will have 74 delegates and 5 alternates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention that will be held July 25 - 28, 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Arizona Democratic Party uses a proportional representation system based upon the results of Arizona’s Presidential Preference Election (Presidential Primary) that will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. Participation in the Arizona Delegate Selection Process is open to all voters who wish to participate as registered Democrats.
In order to encourage full participation, the Arizona Democratic Party will implement programs with specific goals and timetables to encourage participation, particularly among African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian/Pacific Americans and women. Additionally, priority of consideration shall also be given to groups historically under-represented in the Democratic Party’s affairs, by virtue of race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
"The Arizona delegation to the 2012 Democratic National Convention was the most diverse in the country and we plan to repeat that at the 2016 convention," said Alexis Tameron, Chairwoman of the Arizona Democratic Party.
The 43-page plan is posted at the Arizona Democratic Party's website at this link.
