McCain: Seven-week summer break ‘sounds good to me’

Out-of-touch Senator applauds longest recess in 20 years as unfinished business piles up

PHOENIX — Sen. John McCain has proven once again just how out-of-touch he has become with hard-working Arizonans. After news broke that Republican Senate leadership plans to join the House in taking “its longest summer break in two decades,” McCain told Politico, “Good! Sounds good to me, as long as we get our work done.”

While Republican leadership’s decision to schedule this extended break right before next year’s primary election may sound great to McCain, Arizonans deserve a senator fighting for real solutions like comprehensive immigration reform. Of course, Congress won’t “get its work done” on immigration, since McCain’s choice for Speaker of the House has vowed to block any action on immigration until at least 2017.

“With congressional approval ratings at historic lows and leadership only willing to govern by crisis, Senator McCain shouldn’t be cheering seven-week vacations while important work like immigration reform is left undone,” said Barbara Lubin, Arizona Democratic Party Communications Director.
