There are so many things that can be done to help save our environment, and much of it lies in the hands of the Government. Watching An inconvenient Truth, and taking note of all of the ways that the US government is failing us is surely something that will anger you. Mingled in with the end credits were tips on what each of us can do individually, but I would have liked to have seen more of that in the movie. It was very politically charged, and the problem with that is that the average person here feels so helpless in regards to our political system. Our system is broken, we all know it's broken, but we don't know what to do about it.
When the Democratic party can't seem to spit out a decent candidate, and when we do get one - corrupt elections deny him his opportunity, then what do we do?
If nothing else, this movie served as a confirmation that we need Gore to run in '08. He says that he's not interested, but the tone of the movie speaks a different language.
Wether you're Liberal or Conservative - Like Gore, don't like Gore - this is a movie that you need to see. It's factual and to the point without propaganda or any over-bloated ideas. The part that struck me the most was that he never denied that these changes would be happening eventually without us. The fact that he did that helped to understand what was going on.
I previously held to the belief that because the earth cycles and goes through changes all on her own, then we can't be causing these things to happen. The dinosaurs didn't cause an ice age with all of their factories and gas guzzling cars after all.
The earth does cycle, but what I was able to take form this movie is the high rate of speed things have been speeding up over the last 30 years.
People say that the reason things seem to be speeding up and changing so rapidly is because this is the first time this has happened in recorded history, and that this all happened before - we just didn't know about it. Gore showed me how they retrieved their data that goes back over the last 600,000 years, and it showed the natural cycling of the planet, and then it showed what has happened over the last 30 years. It's definitely beyond the realm of our natural cycling. Things weren't even like this prior to our last ice age.
Did you know that the United States can't even sell their domestic cars in China? We don't even meet their standards for emissions. We're trailing far far behind other countries on emissions standards and fuel consumption. Why would American car makers want this to happen? I presume kick backs from the government and the oil industry were promised.
Yet GMC is going belly up and wants to merge with Chrysler to save it's skin. It's not helping them at all - yet they're not coming up to par with the rest of the world. Instead they wait for the government to require it because the technology would be too costly for them. Not developing the technology and putting it on the market is too costly for them. There's plenty of money to go around... the flow isn't going to stop when the flow of pollution does. It's merely going to shift.
I remember back several years ago when Rush Limbaugh was on his warpath about how the tree huggers were putting the logging industry out of business, and robbing jobs from families that need them.
In every other industry we talk about how technology has propelled them forward, but when we're talking about oil drillers and loggers, all we have to say is how we are making their babies starve. Those loggers could make just as good of a living working in a paper recycling plant. Things change - we have to change with them.
Brian pointed out on the way home that the government loves to offer incentives, subsidies and kick backs. We know that the older cars are putting out more pollution than newer ones, so why aren't we offering subsidies to people to switch to lower emissions and better fuel consumption cars? We could get an older car off the road and make it possible for someone to drive something that they've probably been wanting to drive anyhow. The incentive could be larger for hybrids.
This is another thing about this movie that struck me so much. Gore was seen in it several times driving his car. He's not saying that we need to give up every convenience that we have and eat twigs and tree bark to be environmentally friendly. A slight shift can make big changes.
The movie was very well done - engaging, interesting, and thought provoking. It helped to shift my thought process on the changes that we're experiencing today, and I came to realise that my old way of thinking was the easy way out. It's sure a lot easier to believe that we're helpless in the outcome of our time here, and at the whim of the natural cycles of the earth.
It's easier to believe that Global Warming is a theory instead of factual, and the earth issuing a warning to all of us.
