Democrats call on Schweikert to resign or run

Attorneys for the Arizona Democratic Party are investigating whether Maricopa County Treasurer David Schweikert is following the state’s resign-to-run law as he prepares to take on U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell.

On Schweikert’s Web site, supporters can volunteer in the “campaign office,” help put up yard signs or allow their names to be used in endorsements. (https://www.david08exploratory.com/volunteer.aspx)

“Republicans all over the state can’t seem to get it through their heads when it comes to the law: If you’re running for office, give up your seat,” said Emily Bittner, spokeswoman for the Arizona Democratic Party. “Putting up signs and running a campaign office are clear indications of an established candidacy.”

Democrats also urged Schweikert to remove a video from his Web site that was produced to promote his dog, Charlie, using taxpayer dollars. (https://www.david08exploratory.com/media.aspx)

“This is a ridiculous ploy that abuses taxpayer dollars,” Bittner said. “The residents of Maricopa County footed the bill for a fluff piece about Schweikert’s dog – that he’s now using as part of his campaign.”
