Shadegg, Kyl reject Arizona water projects

Rep. John Shadegg and Sen. Jon Kyl again voted against Arizona’s priorities this week, as they supported Bush Administration’s veto of crucial water resources projects across the state.

They stood with the President even as members of both parties in both houses of Congress worked together to override his veto of the Water Resources Development Act. The override was the first in Bush’s presidency.

“These projects are crucial, not only for protecting our ecosystem and economy, but also for flood control infrastructure,” said Emily Bittner, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party. “It’s time for Shadegg and Kyl to start investing in the right priorities at home, instead of the President’s flawed priorities abroad. Their short-sightedness is breathtaking.”

Among the Arizona projects that Kyl and Shadegg voted against: – flood damage reduction, environmental restoration and recreation in the Tucson drainage area; – flood control in the Nogales Wash and its tributaries; – flood damage reduction along the Little Colorado River levee; – flood damage reduction at Rio De Flag in Flagstaff; – environmental restoration of the Salt River in Maricopa County; – environmental restoration of the Santa Cruz River; – environmental restoration of the Tanque Verde Creek in Pima County.

Earlier this year in Nogales alone, a severe flood in the Nogales Wash threatened to break a sewage pipe that carries up to 14 million gallons of sewage a day. The State of Arizona, City of Nogales and Santa Cruz County issued emergency proclamations in the wake of the flooding. (http://nogalesinternational.com/articles/2007/08/28/)
