A move that surprised no one
Statement from Alexis Tameron, Arizona Democratic Party State Chair, on Sen. Carlyle Begay changing his voter registration to the Republican Party:
“In a move that surprised no one, Sen. Carlyle Begay, flanked by Senate President Andy Biggs, finally announced today that he was registering as a Republican. The saying goes, ‘you can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep,’ and Sen. Begay knows that the residents of Legislative District 7 have closely watched his actions, votes and the friendships he’s forged during his time in the Legislature.
During his short tenure in the State Senate, Sen. Begay has often sided with conservative Republicans’ priorities, in addition to casting the deciding vote earlier this year in favor of Governor Ducey’s budget that cut funding to the 33 school districts located within Indian Reservations.
Arizona Democrats look forward to continue working with his seat mates, Representatives Benally and Hale, during the next legislative session to advocate for increased education funding and progressive empowerment on behalf of the families of LD7. We also look forward to replacing him with a Diné Democrat in 2016.”
